BOMB THREAT PROCEDURES
A bomb threat is a federal offense that carries serious penalties. The following section outlines the actions that will be followed during an emergency involving a bomb threat including the identification of a suspicious package.
- If you see a suspicious package, object or potential bomb on campus, DO NOT HANDLE THE PACKAGE/OBJECT! Clear the area and immediately notify Public Safety at extension 2911. The Marietta Police Department and Public Safety will be called to conduct an investigation.
- Any person receiving a phone call that a bomb or other explosive device has been placed on campus should remain calm and keep the caller on the phone as long as possible. Ask the caller:
- When is the bomb going to detonate?
- What kind of bomb is it?
- What will cause it to explode?
- What does it look like?
- Where did you place the bomb?
- Why did you place the bomb?
- Alert a coworker via note (if possible) while on the phone with the bomb threat. It is desirable to have more than one person listen in on the bomb threat call if possible.
- Record the following:
- Time of the call.
- Caller ID number if available
- Sex of the caller.
- The language of the threat.
- Exact wording of the threat.
- The tone/state of the caller’s voice.
- Any background noise.
- Notify Public Safety and provide them with the information from above.
- Public Safety will notify the Marietta Police Department. Everyone will be evacuated from the building (s) and proceed to the designated safe area (s) for a head count. Keep walkways clear for emergency vehicles and personnel.
Ask the caller to repeat the message. Pay particular attention to background noises, such as motors running, music, or any other noises which may indicate the location from which the call is being made. Listen closely to the callers voice to determine voice quality, accents, speech impediments, sex or unusual characteristics.
No one is allowed to return to an evacuated building or area unless told to do so by a University official following release of the scene by police or other agency.
