Local Doctor is Dynamic Chiropractic Magazine's "Person of the Year"

MARIETTA, GA. - Each year, 40 to 60 percent of American adults suffer from chronic back pain. More than one million spine surgery procedures are performed annually, with medical costs to treat back pain approaching $24 billion per year, according to NewsWise Medical News. Ron Kirk, MA, DC, aims to reduce the number of spine surgeries by educating children and adults on spinal hygiene, which is why Dynamic Chiropractic Magazine has named Kirk its 2007 Person of the Year.

A Marietta local, Kirk is a chiropractor and educator at Life University. He earned the Person of the Year title due to his distinguished list of contributions to the chiropractic profession during the past several years. He is adopted by the International Bone and Joint Decade as a central figure for World Spine Day, celebrated on October 16.

Kirk created “Straighten Up” spine exercises to help individuals combat spine deterioration and disc degeneration. These exercises are making their way across the globe from the U.S. to Australia, England, Sweden, Cyprus and India. They have been translated into eight different languages, with more translations in production. The exercises are simple, cost-free and can be practiced in diverse locations. "Straighten Up" is endorsed by the Congress of Chiropractic Organizations, the presidents of ACC chiropractic colleges and the World Federation of Chiropractic.

In October, Kirk was joined by Dr. Milagros Rosado at the CNN Center in downtown Atlanta to be interviewed by award winning CNN Espanol anchor, Claudia Palacios. Dr. Rosado explained the importance of maintaining excellent posture and living a chiropractic lifestyle. During the interview, she described several of the spine exercises as Kirk demonstrated each one.  The interview aired in several Spanish-speaking countries.

In our society, obesity and sedentary living are increasingly on the rise. Stress, anxiety and the rapid pace of life seem to be escalating out of control. The key to applying knowledge into consistent action is to form healthy habits. Habits makeup our lifestyles and have great power to shape our health and our destiny. Recently, Tommy Thompson, the Secretary of the United States Department of Health and Human Services has applauded Life University's Spinal Hygiene program calling it an "important and laudable service".
