Department of Nutrition

Mission

The Mission of the Department of Nutrition is to provide students with the knowledge and skill necessary for a successful career in the various nutritional settings within their community. This is to diversify the mission of the University in its service to the community. The Nutrition Department also strives to provide an educationally challenging environment, so that a graduate of any of the nutrition programs can successfully meet the challenges of today’s healthcare system.

The mission of the Department of Nutrition has been formulated based on the University and College of Arts & Science mission and philosophy of educating the whole student. The Department of Nutrition promotes and supports scholarly activities and critical thinking skills through its course offerings. The Nutrition programs offered at Life University provide a variety of topics, which expose students to many aspects of dietetics and prepares them to obtain employment in any area of the nutrition field.

Goals

Goals for the Department of Nutrition reflect the program offerings and the mission statement and philosophy of the programs and are the basis for evaluation of program effectiveness.

1. Graduates with academic preparation in Nutrition Technology, after successful completion of field experience, will be qualified and prepared for a variety of career opportunities in the field of nutrition.

2. Graduates of the BSN program will possess sound biochemical and physiological knowledge for understanding nutrition and its effects of health and lifestyle and are prepared for their first position in the field of nutrition or dietetics not requiring Registered Dietitian (RD) status.

3. Graduates of the Bachelor of Science in Dietetics program and graduates who receive the Verification Statement will be prepared for obtaining access to a dietetic internship or for achieving their first position in the field not requiring Registered Dietitian (RD) status.

4. Graduates with academic and practical preparation in the Dietetic Internship (DI) program, after successful completion of all rotations, will be eligible to sit for the national registration exam for dietitians, and be qualified and prepared for a variety of career opportunities in the field of dietetics.

5. Graduates will be prepared for and encouraged to seek advanced studies in allied health.

6. Graduates will be satisfied with the advisement they received regarding completion of their education in a timely manner and the quality of education they received at Life University.

7. Graduates will be knowledgeable of community resources and have participated in community activities.

8. Nutrition curricula will be taught by qualified faculty who keep up with their field of expertise via continuing education, research activities, and/or lecturing in other institutions.

9. Program curricula and class instruction will be high quality and incorporate new trends and technology in the field of education and dietetics.

10. Nutrition programs will be supported by a sound budget and marketing plan.
