Police and Public Safety Departments
Life University maintains a Police and Public Safety Department consisting of sworn and non-sworn officers who monitor activities on campus 24 hours per day. Our highly motivated, qualified and well-trained officers enforce local, state and federal laws, while also proactively addressing crime prevention and other quality of life issues. All of our police officers are licensed law enforcement officers with the power to enforce all state of Georgia laws and to make arrests.
We require all students, faculty and staff to wear University identification on campus and to register their vehicle and display a parking sticker or other authorized parking pass. Visitors to campus must register with the Public Safety Department to obtain temporary identification and a parking pass.
We enjoy a beautiful and secure campus. Still, we remain highly vigilant in patrolling the campus and educating students and staff about the importance of crime prevention and personal protection. The Student Services staff also educates students on such issues as responsible alcohol use for those over the age of 21 and self protection against crimes such as date rape.
Perhaps most importantly, we nurture a culture of integrity and self responsibility throughout the academic experience, in extracurricular activities and through Life’s Eight Core Proficiencies woven throughout each student’s academic program. Highlighting issues such as personal integrity and professionalism, we promote high standards of behavior and exhort students to live up to them.
Our Honor Code also makes it clear to students that we have set and expect high standards of behavior and will not tolerate behaviors that are in violation of those standards. Perhaps because our students tend to be a bit more mature than many entering a typical undergraduate institution, we also observe that they generally possess a well-established sense of right and wrong and clearly understand the consequences of inappropriate behavior.
It is our practice to share information readily with the campus community if we become aware of a pattern of theft or any suspicious activity for which students should be on their guard. We also inform students and employees of unsafe practices related to alcohol or drug use, sexual offenses, theft, stalking and domestic violence. Articles, posters or presenetations regarding crime prevention and personal safety are also made available on campus. Crime prevention tapes are also available from Campus Police for loan and discussion.
In compliance with The Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Police and Campus Crime Statistics Act, annual statistics are available on the University’s website regarding all criminal activities. We publish and make available the Annual Campus Police Report, which summarizes incidents on campus. The contents of the Student Right To Know information are contained in the Student Handbook and on the Internet. It lists each required violation by type and frequency. For incidents of concern that occur between the yearly report, we post interim information in the student publications on campus and post information fliers throughout the campus that inform students of the incident.
In the event of a rapidly unfolding campus emergency, the University will use a multi-pronged approach to alerting all faculty, students and staff of the situation and advising them what to do. Notification is conducted and supported by a mass email, intercom, text and voice (for registered individuals) to the campus community, posting of information on the website and posting broadcast notices on inter-campus televisions throughout campus. In addition, officers may broadcast emergency notifications over the public address systems of the police vehicles or handheld megaphones.
Additionally, we have an excellent partnership with other local agencies (Cobb County Police, Marietta Police and Dobbins Air Reserve Base) and area hospitals and participate in a Mutual Aid Agreement with these agencies and Cobb County Government in emergency situations.
