ACADEMIC SUPPORT QUESTIONS

What is Academic Support?

Academic Support are learning services that provide students with the resources needed for academic success and study skills enhancement. SSC Academic Support offers the following services: Supplemental Instruction (SI), Tutoring, online tutoring, Multicultural Academic Support Program (Global Voices and AALPHA), educational workshops, peer mentoring, and learning resources centers.

I’ve been hearing about SI sessions in my DC classes. What is SI?

Supplemental Instruction (SI) is an academic support program that targets historically difficult courses. SI is a non-remedial approach to learning enrichment designed to increase student performance and retention. SI offers regularly scheduled, out-of-class review sessions to all students enrolled in targeted courses. SI study sessions are informal seminars in which students review notes, discuss readings, develop organizational tools, and prepare for examinations. Students learn how to integrate course content with reasoning and study skills (University of Missouri-Kansas City, 2018).

What is a SI leader?

SI Leaders are students who have previously taken the course and have earned an “A” in the course. Faculty typically recommend the leaders who facilitate the SI sessions. SI Leaders undergo a vigorous training and are prepared to share effective study techniques/tools that are beneficial in the course.

Does Academic Support Services offer tutoring services for undergraduate students?

Yes, Academic Support Services offers tutoring. Tutoring sessions are drop-in sessions. If tutoring services are not offered, students can stop by the SSC and complete a tutoring subject request form.
Student are also encouraged to contact their faculty for further assistance.

How will I know if SI and/or tutoring sessions are available in my courses?

The SI Leader will make an announcement about available sessions within the first 2 weeks of class for the corresponding course with the time and locations for the sessions. Hard copies of the SI and tutoring schedules are available in the following locations: (1) SSC main office (CCE building) and (2) CGUS 218/219. Electronic copies of the schedules can be accessed through Blackboard SSC course and thought the SSC Life Facebook official page.

I am having trouble with my homework at home. Does Life University offer an online tutoring service to its students?

Life University Academic Support offers online tutoring and writing services through Smarthinking which is appropriate for a variety of institutional models and support online or on-campus students. Students can connect on demand with an expert tutor for a drop-in session 24 hours a day, schedule an appointment in advance, submit writing for detailed review, or ask a question offline. Students can access the site through any of their course’s Blackboard page.

What is the cost to attend a SI and/or tutoring session?

SI/Tutoring sessions are free to students. Students are encouraged to come as often as they like; however, statistics show that the more frequently students attend the sessions, the better their grades are (University of Missouri-Kansas City, 2018).

What is the SSC Global Voices program?

Global Voices supports non-native, English-speaking students to strengthen their communication skills so that they may be more successful in their academic programs at Life University. Students can find resources to enhance their reading and speaking of the English language, along with other support. The resources are available in MOD 4.

What is the AALPHA program?

AALPHA supports multicultural students pursue academic excellence and assist with building a community on-campus. AALPHA coordinates academic development activities that address the specific academic needs (i.e. SI, tutoring, and educational workshops) of multicultural students.

What is the STARS Mentoring Program?

STARS Peer Mentoring Program is to serve as an integral part of the university to promote the improvement of academic success, persistence, and successful graduation of a student. The program provides an opportunity for students to help others connect to Life University, assist with the transition, navigate the university, and work toward academic goals.

Are there any educational workshops that I can attend to assist with the transition?

Yes, there are educational workshops for Life University students. Educational Workshops include such topics as effective learning strategies, learning styles, study habits, goal setting, and time management. The workshops vary from interactive processes to individual one-on-one workshops by appointment. Please refer to the Workshop Schedule for dates, times, and locations of workshops. Students can pick up a hard copy of the quarterly workshop schedule in the SSC in the CCE building or in CGUS 218/219. Electronic versions of the schedule can be accessed via the SSC Blackboard page and/or the Life University SSC Facebook page.

What are the Student Success Center’s Learning Resource Centers?

Open Learning Resource Centers provide a comfortable place to work on assignments and study while the student is on campus. The Learning Resource Centers are open to all Life University students. Each Learning Resource Center has resources that are beneficial to support the students’ academic achievement at Life University.

Where are the Learning Labs located? What are the hours of operation?

There are three Student Success Center Learning Labs. The Learning Labs are located in CCE 109, CGUS 217, CGUS 218/219. Hours vary according to each Learning Resource Center.

Where can I find out more information of the services that the SSC Academic Support provides Life University students?

COUNSELING QUESTIONS

What is counseling and how can it help me?

Counseling is a collaborative, confidential process designed to help you address your concerns, come to a greater understanding of yourself, and learn effective personal and interpersonal coping strategies. It involves a confidential relationship between you and a trained therapist who has the desire and willingness to help you accomplish your individual goals. The outcome of counseling is often positive; however, the level of satisfaction for any individual is not predictable. Your therapist is available to support you throughout the counseling process.

Who is eligible to use the SSC Counseling services?

All students that are currently enrolled at Life University.

What kinds of services does SSC Counseling services provide?

SSC Counseling offers a variety of services, which cater to the diverse needs of our students: Life University offers individual and couples counseling through the Student Assistance Program (SAP). SAP provides 24/7 availability of an off-campus counselor via phone. Life University students can request face-to-face visits with an off-campus therapist and will be provided with six free sessions per year. In addition, students have six free coaching sessions available (telephonic), a text option for services as well as a dedicated Life U phone number. With the use of the dedicated phone number, students receive unlimited calls for services and immediate help of a mental health professional. This service allows students consistent availability, including nights, weekends and/or holidays with a licensed mental health professional outside of the University. In addition, the service can be utilized by students’ dependents which include spouses and children. You can contact SAP directly at 866.734.5890, text 94097 and/or request support at espyr.com (password – lifeu). An SSC Counselor can also assist you in making contact with SAP.

Each quarter, students can attend one of the many SSC Counseling Health Promotion and Wellness workshops, participate in Circle of Hope (grief & loss support), and/or Parent 2 Parent (support for parents).

To inquire or take advantage of these resources, students can call the Student Success Center at 770.426.2725 or stop by the office located in the Center for Chiropractic Education (CCE) building. Students will find various community resources and can also speak with a counselor who will help them navigate through the process of connecting to the most valuable resource, whether that is a wellness workshop, helpful relaxation techniques, crisis intervention care, support group, creative strategies to add to their toolbox, connecting with additional campus resources or facilitating a call to an SAP therapist or other resources within the community.

Where is SSC Counseling services located?

The SSC is located in the Center for Chiropractic Education (CCE). SAP counselors are located in the community which you can request near school, home or work.

How do I contact SSC Counseling?

Students are encouraged to contact the Student Success Center at 770.426.2725 and ask to speak to the Director of Counseling or a counselor to find out more information and possible next steps. In addition, students can contact the Student Assistance Program (SAP) by calling 866.734.5890, text 94097 and/or request support at espyr.com (password – lifeu). During the call, students will speak directly to a mental health professional, discuss their immediate concerns and/or schedule a time to meet with a local therapist for face-to-face counseling (up to 6 free sessions) or coaching sessions which are telephonic (up to 6 free sessions).

What will my counseling cost?

The services provide through the counseling area are free. The services of SAP are at no cost for all currently enrolled students; however, an additional few may be assessed if students utilize the 6 free sessions for face-to-face sessions as well as coaching sessions. If additional services are referred out to students, beyond those provided to the students at no cost, fess may be at the charge of the student. The SSC will attempt to help with referral resource needs for our students.

If I’m worried about someone other than myself, what should I do?

A student of concern can be reported to the Life Student Behavioral Assessment Team (S.B.A.T.) – https://publicdocs.maxient.com/reportingform.php?LifeUniv&layout_id=1. Campus Safety can also be contacted immediately at 770-426-2911.

DISABILITY SERVICE QUESTIONS

What is a disability?

A disability is a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more of the major life activities of the individual. Disability Services serves students with appropriately documented disabilities significantly affecting major life functions.

Who do I contact to learn more about Disability Services?

Students with questions about Disability Services or would like to request accommodations should contact Dr. Genelle Haney, Director of Disability Services in the Student Success Center at 770-426-2725 or Genelle.Haney@LIFE.edu.

What documentation is required to qualify for services?

Students need to provide documentation from a qualified professional that shows the presence of a disability, the functional limitations of that disability, and recommendations for accommodations in a college setting. An IEP and 504 Plan, while helpful, are not necessarily enough to qualify for services.

I have a disability. Do I need to register with these?

We encourage all students with disabilities to register with Disability Services in the SSC. Even if you feel like you don’t need or want our services, it is best to have accommodations in place should you need to use them. Accommodations are not retroactive. However, the decision is yours. While encouraged, students with disabilities are not required to register with SSC. However, a student can only receive accommodations for a disability if the student is registered with SSC Disability Services with approved accommodations

What types of Disability Services are offered? What services do I qualify for?

Services for each student is assessed on a case-by-case basis based upon multiple details including but not limited to the impact in daily living as documented and professionals’ recommendations for implementation of accommodations to address the limitations.
