At Life, “THE ONLY CONSTANT AT LIFE IS CHANGE”

A significant transformation of Life University Clinics is underway. We have received input through student surveys, comments, and feedback from Alumni, PEAK, our clinicians, and the field doctors hiring our graduates. Our students need and expect more. With this input, we have identified areas where support in integrating clinical skills into patient care is necessary.

Our goal in transforming the Clinic experience is to help students become better prepared for their experiences in practice. We believe the best way for students to practice and learn clinical skills is by utilizing a Mentorship Model. A Mentorship Model affords the opportunity to Watch, Perform, Explain. We believe that providing opportunities for our Clinicians to model efficient and effective practices enhances skill development. Increasing student involvement as specific levels of proficiency is demonstrated will help our students integrate all they have learned into an efficient and competent clinical mindset.

More intensive clinical learning will occur in the CCHOP, with lower student to clinician ratios. Beginning in the 7th quarter, students will refine and improve proficiencies in history-taking, an understanding of physical examination, case management, and recording notes into the electronic health records. These skills will be further expanded in the 8th quarter. In a small group setting, students will continue to expand proficiencies in the examination, develop an appropriate plan for patient care, and report findings in a meaningful way.

Students will continue to work on their adjusting skills in 8th quarter following their assessments, as they do now. Within the smaller groups, they will be guided in technique, bedside manner, and educating the patient about chiropractic care and their overall health and wellness during each encounter.

During Summer 21, students in 9th quarter will transition locations and have their clinic experience in the C-HOP. Care for out-patient and all other Life University students, student families, and Life University employees and their families will occur in this location. The Mentorship Model will continue at C-HOP, where students will be involved in best practices for comprehensive patient care. They will examine, create care plans, and adjust patients under the mentorship of their faculty clinician.

Insurance is now accepted in the C-HOP so that students can practice documenting, diagnosing, and coding for third-party payers. The benefit of care at C-HOP for students, employees, and families from all areas of the University will remain unchanged.

The Clinic Leadership Team will continue to update the Life community as plans unfold on this Clinic Transformation page. Enhancing student learning enhances patient care, now and in each student’s future practice.
