History of Life University

History of Life University

What began as a bold vision for chiropractic education has grown into a university dedicated to developing leaders, advancing knowledge, and making a meaningful impact. Explore the people, milestones, and defining moments that shaped Life University.

Life University’s story begins with Dr. Sid E. Williams, whose experience receiving chiropractic care as a football player at Georgia Tech inspired him to pursue a career in the profession. In 1956, he and his wife, Dr. Nell Williams, graduated from Palmer School of Chiropractic and went on to establish practices throughout the Southeast.

Driven by a vision to make chiropractic care more accessible and advance the profession through education, Dr. Williams established the Dynamic Essentials seminars in 1964 and the Life Foundation in 1965. Together, these initiatives brought supporters around a shared goal: establishing a chiropractic college in Georgia.

With the support of hundreds of chiropractors, friends, and donors, Life Chiropractic College was founded in 1974 and welcomed its first class of students in January 1975. What began as an ambitious idea became the foundation of Life University.

Life Chiropractic College experienced significant growth in its early years, becoming one of the world’s largest chiropractic colleges. Over time, the institution evolved into Life University, expanding beyond chiropractic education to offer undergraduate, graduate, and professional programs. As the university grew, it continued to develop its campus and create new opportunities for students to learn, lead, and serve.

That growth has not been without challenges. In 2002, the university faced significant accreditation and financial difficulties that prompted leadership changes and institutional restructuring. A period of recovery followed, with renewed efforts to strengthen academic quality, restore enrollment, and invest in the university’s future.

Over the following decades, Life U continued to develop its academic and clinical facilities, student housing, research initiatives, and athletic programs. These investments helped expand the university’s educational experience while supporting its contributions to chiropractic care, community health, and service.

Through every stage of its development, Life University has remained grounded in the philosophy of Lasting Purpose: to give, to do, to love, and to serve out of one’s own abundance.

More than 50 years after its founding, Life University continues to build on the vision that shaped its beginnings. What started as a commitment to advancing chiropractic education has grown into a broader mission of preparing students for meaningful careers and lives of leadership, integrity, and service.

As higher education and the needs of today’s workforce continue to evolve, so does Life U. Through academic innovation, hands-on learning opportunities, and continued investment in its campus and programs, the university remains focused on providing an educational experience that prepares students for the challenges and opportunities ahead.

Looking to the future, Life University is committed to strengthening its academic offerings, supporting student success, and expanding its impact within the communities it serves. While much has changed since 1974, the university’s guiding principles remain the same. Its story continues through every student, educator, graduate, and supporter who contributes to what Life U will become.
