Congratulations to Anna-Marie Schmidt

The Dr. Sid E. Williams Center for Chiropractic Research wants to congratulate 14th quarter D.C. student Anna-Marie Schmidt on her acceptance to Palmer College of Chiropractic as a post-doctoral research scholar. Her official start date is January 7, 2019.

The post-doctoral research scholar is a full-time position and one-year appointment at the Palmer Center for Chiropractic Research with possible extension. Post-doctoral research scholars train under the direction and supervision of faculty mentors in preparation for academic or research careers. The position emphasizes scholarship and research training for Doctors of Chiropractic.

While at Life University, Anna has been a Research Track scholar and developed a line of biomechanics research that built on her previous experience as a musician with a master’s degree in piano performance. She presented a sequence of related projects in the performance postures and movements of pianists at the Georgia Music Teachers’ Association Conference, the National Conference on Keyboard Pedagogy and the Sherman Chiropractic College International Research and Philosophy Symposium, all in 2017; in 2018, additional research was presented at the Association of Chiropractic Colleges’ Research Agenda Conference and the American Society of Biomechanics annual meeting. The final stages of the project recorded movement variability of pianists with playing-related musculoskeletal pain before and after chiropractic care.

Anna, we fully anticipate that you will represent Life University well in your future endeavors. Congratulations!

Center for Chiropractic Research Project Accepted for Journal Publication

The Journal of Chiropractic Medicine has accepted the article titled “A case study involving Chronic Progressive External Ophthalmoplegia and Bilateral Vestibular Hypofunction: balance, gait, and eye movement, before and after chiropractic care” for publication. This report describes a patient whose main concern was chronic progressive external ophthalmoplegia (CPEO), a form of mitochondrial disease in which eye movements become increasingly limited, and vision can be obscured by ptosis (eyelid droop). The patient also had been diagnosed with bilateral vestibular hypofunction (BVH), which can cause disorientation and poor postural balance.

There is no established treatment for CPEO, and there have been no previous reports of chiropractic care for either CPEO or BVH. Following 18 visits of chiropractic care, the patient had substantially decreased postural sway, and there were small improvements in eye movement, ptosis and walking stability. This project was the product of Center for Chiropractic Research team members Drs. Brent Russell, Ron Hosek, Kathryn Hoiriis and Ms. Emily Drake, with special acknowledgements to Dr. Stephanie Sullivan and Ms. Angela Seckington. Congratulations!

Dr. Joe Guagliardo Honored as Teacher of the Year

This image shows Dr. Guagliardo at the Cobb Chamber event recognizing him as Teacher of the Year from Life University.

Each year, the Cobb Chamber of Commerce sponsors a Give Our Schools a Hand (GOSH) breakfast and pep rally to show appreciation for teachers in the community. This year marked the 30th annual GOSH event, and there were more than 130 Teachers of the Year from Cobb County, Marietta City and Post-Secondary Education Systems recognized and celebrated. This salute to education is one of the largest in the nation.

On Tuesday, October 23, 2018, Dr. Joe Guagliardo represented Life University as the Teacher of the Year at the GOSH event. He received recognition as one of Cobb County’s most deserving teachers who focuses on education, teaching and learning to the many students whose lives he influences every day. He was accompanied by his sister Mrs. Mary Beth Peters who attended the celebration to share in this exciting moment with him.

Please help me in congratulating Dr. Joe Guagliardo on this amazing honor of being recognized as Teacher of the Year by the Cobb Chamber of Commerce!

Thank-a-Teacher Program

The Thank-a-Teacher program is a Center for Excellence in Teaching & Learning initiative that allows students to show appreciation to faculty members who have made a difference in their education. How does it work? All you have to do is share your thoughts through the Thank-a-Teacher website, and your appreciation letter will be passed along (you can remain anonymous or include your name). The letter will then be given to the instructor, and they will be recognized during Life University’s Faculty and Staff Development Planning (FSDP) event. If you would like to submit a Thank-a-Teacher letter, please click here.

Food 4 LIFE Pantry

From time to time, our students (and even employees) find themselves without enough to eat. For students, this is especially true near the end of the quarter and sometimes over break.

To help with food needs, we have established Food4LIFE, a food pantry here on campus.

If you need food, please email Food4LIFE@LIFE.eduIf you would like to donate food, please bring your items to one of the following locations:

  • Wellness Center
  • Library

These are the most needed items:

  • Baby formula
  • Proteins (canned or vacuum-packed tuna, chicken, salmon, hearty soups and stews)
  • Pasta/rice (regular and gluten-free)
  • Tomato sauce/pasta sauce
  • Grocery store (Kroger or Walmart) gift cards in $10-$15 amounts to cover fresh foods

We do NOT need canned vegetables at this time!

ALSO – we have a freezer now, so if you would like to donate frozen food, please contact Food4LIFE@LIFE.edu to arrange a drop-off time for frozen foods.

Thanks to all who help keep the pantry stocked for those in need.

Stay Connected to Life University Campus Safety with New Safety App, LiveSafe

Life University is providing all students, faculty and staff with the LiveSafe app – a safety tool that provides a quick, convenient and discreet way to communicate with LIFE Campus Safety officials, enhancing your overall safety and allowing Campus Safety officials to better protect you.

LiveSafe Goals: A Mobile Solution to Increase Overall Safety
  • Communication: To increase communication between the LIFE community and Campus Safety officials in order to increase safety and awareness
  • Prevention: To be a preventive measure in stopping crimes and incidents before they occur
  • Collaboration: To leverage the community’s eyes and ears in helping keep campus safe
Main Features of the LiveSafe App:
  • Report Tips: The “Report Tips” feature allows you to send text, picture, video and audio directly to LIFE Campus Safety officials in real-time, and anonymously if you prefer. You can share information about any safety incidents or concerns, such as suspicious activity, theft, harassment and more. You can also engage in a live chat with a Campus Safety official.
  • Emergency Options: By calling 911, calling LIFE Campus Safety or Messaging LIFE Campus Safety officials from the “Emergency Options” screen, you will initiate location tracking, allowing Campus Safety officials to see where you are and respond to you more quickly in an emergency situation. You can easily stop location tracking at any time after the call is placed.
  • SafeWalk: Get from place to place safely by using SafeWalk to invite your contacts to “virtually escort” you, allowing them to follow your location on a map as they chat with you. You can request to virtually escort others as well.
  • Receive Alerts: Stay up-to-date by receiving important safety notifications and emergency alerts from LIFE Campus Safety officials.
Best Practices to Download and Start Using the LiveSafe App:
  • Complete your profile: To gain the maximum benefit of the LiveSafe app, make sure to complete your user profile with your mobile phone number. This helps LIFE better respond to reports you send in.
  • Enable Push Notifications: Allow “Push Notifications” to be enabled in your Settings. Life University CampusSafety will send important alerts through SMS, email and push notifications. You will not be spammed.
  • Enable Location Services: Be sure to enable location services. Safety officials rely on GPS data to better serve and protect you. When you report an incident or make an emergency call through the app, Life University will see your location so they can respond quickly. Don’t worry! You are not being actively tracked and can stop location tracking (when used during emergencies) any time you want.
Steps to Download LiveSafe:
  1. Download “LiveSafe” from the App Store or Google Play (Enable location services and push notifications when prompted).
  2. Sign up using your mobile phone number.
  3. Create a password and fill in your name.
  4. Search for “Life University” to connect with the organization.
  5. Add your email to your profile (Left Menu > Settings > Profile).
