Socrates Café is a gathering place for all members of the LIFE community and has become a fine example of LIFE living its mission. Located at one end of the Center for Undergraduate Studies building, the Café dining area is comfortable, spacious and opens up to an inviting outdoor patio area with shaded seating areas near reflection pools, vegetation, a fire pit and soothing streams.

The indoor seating areas are comfortable, with smart booths and flat screens, high ceilings, natural lighting and big screen for live or re-broadcasted events, such as LIFE rugby and basketball games. For snacks, Plato II Go has extended hours and a variety of grab-and-go food selections and coffee after 3:00 p.m. when the main Socrates Café is closed. Seating areas are available for study every night.

LEED Certified and Environmentally Conscious

Menus in the Socrates Café are seasonal and regional, with items freshly-made and featuring clean-label ingredients and sourcing from local and regional organic farmers and vendors. Entrees, soups and sauces are prepared by hand and from scratch in the Café kitchen. Most-requested items, such as breakfast eggs, are cage-free;  burgers are fresh and locally grass fed.

Pizzas are a Café specialty with fresh, creative toppings and a char-grilled crust. Each week the calzones of the day are also offered and the menus change, highlighting guest and chef favorites, seasonal specials and accommodating many preferences: dairy-free, gluten-free, soy-free, locally grown, vegan, vegetarian, wild-caught, organic and sustainable. The Café is about choice, quality and excellent service.

Natural lighting reduces energy consumption and promotes a more calming atmosphere. A two-story wall on the east/southeast side of the Café offers beautiful views and less need to use energy. Outdoors, foliage replaces concrete where possible to create a more inviting area and decrease runoff. Environmentally-friendly disposable products are used in the Café and during catering functions. These non-traditional foodservice products use the fewest virgin, non-renewable resources possible.

The Café was constructed according to the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System, a third-party certification program used by architects, engineers, interior designers, construction managers and other officials to effectively build according to environmental sustainability. This means that in all facets of the project from planning, development and construction, the environment was a top priority.
